Why this happens
Leaking with coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise usually happens when the pelvic floor muscles cannot fully support sudden pressure on the bladder.
Pregnancy, birth, ageing and prior surgery can all weaken these muscles. So can never having learned to use them correctly in the first place.
Why common does not mean nothing can be done
This affects a lot of women, at different life stages, which can make it feel normal to just manage around. It is common, but that does not mean it has to stay this way.
Many people see real improvement once the right muscles are properly assessed, retrained, and strengthened with guidance.
What a physiotherapy plan usually involves
The first step is understanding your pattern: when it happens, how often, and what seems to trigger it.
From there, the plan usually includes correcting pelvic floor technique, building strength and control, and practical strategies for the moments that trigger leaking.
What realistic progress looks like
Many women notice a real difference within weeks of consistent, correctly guided practice, though everyone’s pace is different.
We review progress, and if something is not improving as expected, we say so and discuss what should happen next, including when to involve a doctor.
When to also see a doctor
Sudden changes, pain, blood, or signs of infection are reasons to see a doctor alongside any physiotherapy. We ask about these symptoms and will point you toward medical care when it is needed.
Physiotherapy and medical care often work well together, not as alternatives to each other.

Common questions
Is this just something I have to live with after having children?
No. It is common, but common does not mean untreatable. Many women see real improvement with the right pelvic floor and core work, guided properly rather than guessed at alone.
Is this only a concern after birth?
No. It can happen at any life stage, including with ageing, menopause, or unrelated to childbirth at all. Whatever the cause, we are glad to discuss your situation.
Do I need surgery for this?
Not usually as a first step. Physiotherapy is often tried first, since many people improve significantly with the right pelvic floor and core rehabilitation, and can avoid needing more invasive options.
For a plan that fits the person, a registered physiotherapist or doctor should assess them first. This page is general information to help you decide what to ask.
