Why a date on a calendar is not the full picture

Six weeks is often mentioned as a general guideline. It is not a finish line. Some bodies are ready for more by then, others need longer, especially after a difficult delivery or a caesarean.

What matters more is how your pelvic floor, core and overall body are actually functioning. A physiotherapist can properly check this.

What is worth checking first

Before building back up, it helps to know whether there is any leaking, heaviness, or separation in the abdominal muscles that needs attention first.

Starting the right exercises for where your body actually is now avoids setting back the areas that need more time.

Why rushing back can cause problems later

Returning to high-impact exercise before the core and pelvic floor are ready can lead to symptoms that show up later, such as leaking or ongoing heaviness.

Building up gradually, with the right foundation first, tends to get you back to full activity more reliably, not more slowly.

How the plan builds up

A good plan usually starts gentle: breathing, pelvic floor and core coordination, then adds load and impact as your body shows it is ready.

Progress is reviewed at each stage, so you know you are building on a safe foundation, not just pushing through.

Every family’s timeline is different

Some mothers want to return to running or the gym. Others simply want to lift their child comfortably or manage daily tasks without pain.

Tell us what matters most to you, and the plan is built around that goal, not a generic postnatal programme.

Common questions

Common questions

Is six weeks the right time to start exercising again?

Six weeks is a common general guideline, but every recovery is different. What matters more than the date is how your body is actually healing, including pelvic floor and core function, which we can assess.

What if I had a caesarean section?

Recovery timing and considerations differ after a caesarean, since it is abdominal surgery. We ask about your delivery and any advice your doctor gave, and build the plan around that.

Is it normal to feel unsure about my body after birth?

Very normal. Many women feel this way. A good plan rebuilds strength and confidence gradually, so you feel steady in your body again, not just physically recovered on paper.
